Pediatric Dentistry
Decay in children's teeth can be a severe health problem. Just as serious is how children feel while the diseased teeth are being treated. Our goal is to provide children a normal, healthy smile while avoiding painful, fearful dental visits that could "turn them off" to regular future preventive dental care.
To help accomplish dental treatment, we offer several choices:
Laughing Gas
Most youngsters are very calm and comfortable during our dental treatment. Adequate amounts of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), local anesthetic (Lidocain), and tender loving care create a supportive, friendly environment that allows children to relax and accept treatment. Your help makes the difference. Your child will wear a nose piece and breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen which gives them a warm, secure, floating feeling during treatment. Nitrous oxide is very safe. The nitrous oxide sensation is gone within 5 minutes at the end of the appointment, leaving your child feeling relaxed and refreshed.
Oral Sedation (Sleepy Juice)
Fearful children who have only a few cavities can use a tranquilizing medication to help calm them down enough to allow treatment to be performed. We give a 1-2 teaspoon drink of liquid Versed "Sleepy Juice" in our office. It takes about 15 minutes for the "Sleepy Juice" to work. 80% of children will become relaxed and allow us to perform dental treatment. 20% however may become agitated or combative with the juice. Depending on your child's personality, "Sleepy Juice" may be a great option.
IV Sedation In the Office Extremely frightened children or children with a significant amount of dental treatment needed can be treated with IV sedation. Our Board-certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist, Dr. Viola Devany, will sedate your child here in the office. With this deep sedation service, most treatment will be completed in one appoinment. We provide IV sedation for children as young as 1 year old who need significant dentistry. She and our Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Dajani, have offered this in-office IV sedation service to families since 1999, allowing parents to avoid the expense and added drama that hospital sedation creates. Hospital Sedation for Children Occasionally, a family prefers to have significant dentistry completed in a hospital setting due to a child's chronic health problems or to coordinate multiple medical procedures into one appointment. Dr. Dajani sees these children at Dayton Children's Hospital. Once treatment is completed, we enjoy helping children to join our No Decay Club! 85% of our kids are decay free - with our focus on teaching families how to avoid decay with nutrition coaching, brushing & flossing techniques and fluoride recommendations. Available for small group talks - Dr. Dajani is committed to helping improve dental health in our community. She and her staff give presentations at local school, pediatrician offices, mom's groups and health fairs. Dr. Smith provides presentations for adult groups. _________________________________________________________________ Dr. Dajani does a great job of talking the patient through the procedure and keeping the patient relaxed.
